M8 (NGC 6523) (emission nebula) Called the Lagoon Nebula, it is the most prominent emisssion nebula in the summer Milky Way (much more so than M20, for example). A close examination reveals two main sections separated by a dust lane, which gave M8 its name. Is is a giant stellar birthplace. Distacne estiamtes for M20 are the same as for M8 (about 2282-2608 light years).
